PIN-UP, Issue 1, front cover

For the inaugural issue, the design responds to the playful content and limited budget. All content is typeset in Times New Roman, Arial and Courier. A large, slightly wide format of 23 × 30 cm/9 × 11.8 inches is bound saddlestich to emphasize its informality. In reference to the idea of the architectural PIN–UP, images are composed asymmetrically at different scales and positions on a 12-column grid throughout the magazine.
Due to constraints in the printing budget and as a strategy to unify images of inconsistent quality, different printing signatures are printed in either four color CMYK or one color black. Layouts ignore the hierarchy of the two different kinds of signatures. For the issue’s furniture story, artists working in Central Park were commissioned to illustrate them.
Comme Des Garçons agreed to a back cover advertisement just before printing began which suddenly made the magazine feel real.
